The original medieval castle, built 1363 - 1365, was rebuilt in 1549 as a Renaissance chateau.
Baroque renovations were carried out by the Lobkovic family in the 18th century; the statue of Atalanta on the unsympathetic balcony over the main entrance dates from the same period.
