Plague column [ Statue, sculptural group or sculpture ]

Nový Jičín, Masarykovo náměstí
Plague column
In the centre of square there is mounted a Baroque sandstone column of the Virgin Mary. Its base is formed by quadratic pedestal with corner prismatic small pillars on which statues of four saint are settled. On the northeastern side of pedestal there is embrasure with under-life sized statue of St. Rozalie. Niche with depressed funicular arch is closed with nice wrought lattice with shatter. On a stony moulding circulating circumference of pedestal there are settled figures of St. Jan Nepomucký, St. Florián, St. Roch and St. J. Sarkander (?). Figures of serious appearance gaze in front of themselves and are represented by usual attributes. Narrow prismatic pedestal built in the middle among the Saints brings slim column with stylized Corinthian capital. Above-lifesize figure of Our bareheaded Lady stands in the skyes and she grips in her arms little Jesus, in the right hand she holds moreover a truncheon. Little Jesus is provided with spherulitic glory and plays with an apple. Our Lady with circle of stars round her head gazes majestically in front of herself. Outline closeness of the figure is laid by simply conceived robes of the Virgin Mary with predominant flat vertical and diagonal winding. The work dates back to 1710 when it was acquired from heritage of townsmen Tomáš and Judita Stirznik to a memory of big plague from 1680. The monument was rather adjusted by later hits. Expertly the column was restored in 1958 by academical sculptor A. Rozehnal.
